Healthy Living Tips for Seniors

Your body undergoes a variety of physical and mental changes as you get older. This puts you at a greater risk for developing several health conditions. However, there are many things that you can do to protect your health as you get older.

Eating Well

One of the most important things that seniors can do to keep themselves healthy is to eat well. Many conditions that can have a negative effect on senior health, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can be prevented or controlled with diet. Your diet should include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. Try to limit your intake of processed foods.

Maintain An Active Social Life

Maintaining an active social life is another important part of healthy living. Your senior years can be lonely because many people lose their spouses, family members and friends. However, studies have shown that being lonely can be just as detrimental to your health as smoking.

You can join a club or take a class that interests you. Getting involved in the community is another thing that you can do to meet other people. You will also be enriching your life by doing those activities.

Staying Active

Try to get 30 minutes of activity in per day. Physical exercise strengthens your heart, lowers your blood pressure, improves sleep and improves your balance. It can also help you keep your weight under control. Walking, swimming and dancing are some of the exercises that are ideal for seniors.

Get Preventative Checkups

You should go to your doctor for a checkup at least once a year. You should also ask your doctor about special screenings such as breast cancer screening, prostate cancer screening and a colonoscopy. The earlier conditions are detected, the easier they are to treat.
